Lisa GordonMemberI am trying to add some widgets (search, categories, etc) to my front page, which is my posts page, and cannot figure out how to do it. Each time I click on the widgets section in the customizer, I get the following message:
“There are no widget areas currently rendered in the preview. Navigate in the preview to a template that makes use of a widget area in order to access its widgets here.”I am trying to follow the instructions from here: https://wordpress.com/themes/mood/
but my site does not look like that in many ways.Thank you!!
The blog I need help with is asketchbookofdays.comJanuary 27, 2016 at 3:49 pm #163641
Kathryn P.Happiness EngineerHi there! The key to getting your site looking more like the demo – including having your widgets on the homepage – is to set your front page to a static page, and assigning the Front Page template to that page.
First, create a new page, which you can either leave blank or add some content to.
Then, assign the page to the Front Page template via the Page Options, as you see here:
The Front Page template includes a widget area, so as soon as you set it up you’ll be able to add Widgets throught the Customizer, and the ones you’ve already added will display on the front page.
The Mood setup guide is here, and it lists the steps for setting up the static homepage with the Front Page template:

Just let me know if you get stuck at any step!

Lisa GordonMemberI am so sorry, but I am completely confused.
When you go to http://www.asketchbookofdays.com, isn’t that my home page? In other words the first page that you land on when typing in the URL. It is that page that I want for a home (landing) page, and where I would like to put the widgets in the footer.I went ahead and added a Home page, and yes, I can now add the widgets to the footer, but I do not like the way you have to move around so much to get the info I want in the footer.
I am sorry, and it’s very possible that I have chosen the wrong theme for what I want. It’s just that I really liked the design, typography, etc. If I have chosen the wrong design for what I want, please just let me know.
Thank you so very much.

Kathryn P.Happiness EngineerYou’re nearly there! Just a couple more steps left:
– create a new page called Blog, and leave it empty
– go into your Customizer’s Static Front Page panel
– select “A static page”
– choose the new “Home” page you created as your Front page
– choose the new “Blog” page you created and select it for your Posts pageAs soon as you do that, your widgets will appear on the front page.
Let me know how it goes – sorry it’s been confusing, but you’re nearly there. :)
