Hi. I am not looking to transfer to WordPress.org any time really soon, but I hope to eventually. Early this year I bought the premium theme Minimum which I love. I just noticed that Guided Transfers are not offered for Premium Themes, and it states that one must switch to a free theme first, and “(we’ll switch that theme for you)”.

First of all, I wish there had been some kind of warning of this before purchasing my theme. I don’t regret buying it but I think that is important information that should be prominently displayed to anyone about to buy a premium theme.

I did eventually find where one can purchase the theme for a self-hosted site (here).

So, my question is: If I wanted to switch to a self-hosted site using this other version of Minimum, would I really have to switch to a free theme, have it all transferred, and then have to turn right around and install my Minimum theme? This is especially bothersome to me given any lag time where my website would be displaying some other theme that I don’t really want it to. I don’t want to confuse my visitors by switching the look and then switching back.

I very much appreciate any help with this.

The blog I need help with is design-vox.com

HI there. Thanks a lot for your feedback about guided transfers and premium themes. Unfortunately there’s really no way to do this right now with partner themes. A partner theme — like Minimum by StudioPress — isn’t something that we have control over on the .org side of things. You could, if you wanted, post to the Minimum forum and ask what StudioPress can help you with as far as using the theme on a self-hosted install, but that’s up to their discretion. If you were able to work something out with StudioPress, then you could switch to a free theme on .com, go through guided transfer, and then use the self-hosted version of Minimum on your blog. Still, this isn’t totally perfect because the .com version and .org versions of the theme aren’t always exactly the same, but this is the best that we have at the moment. I totally understand your frustration, though, and it’s something we’re definitely trying to make better as time goes on.

Thank you Philip. I appreciate your response and ideas. I will get in touch with StudioPress if and when I decide to make the switch.

As a side note, I can’t seem to locate the Minimum-specific forum. I have used it twice in the past, but now whenever I click on the “Minimum theme documentation” link on this page or links like the one’s you included above, instead it sends me to http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/, which is not Minimum specific. And when I scroll down on the left of that page where all the premium themes are listed, Minimum is not there. Am I crazy or did it just disappear? :)

Hi Christina. This is really weird. Let me ask around and try to see if we can’t get this fixed for you immediately. Thanks so much for the heads up and thanks for the patience.

Great. Thanks for checking Christina. I’ll close this thread but please feel free to open another if any other issues come up.
