I recently activated the featured image slider with the grid main page layout. When I assigned existing posts the tag “featured”, whatever featured image that had already been assigned appeared in the slider at variable image widths depending on the varied sizes. However, when I created new custom sized images for the slider and assigned them as the new featured images of the featured posts, they appeared tiny with the post’s title inside the frame. The posts with the preassigned featured images from before the switch appear larger and with the post title in small font inside the black text block.
Additionally, the grid stop 11 images down and leaves a blank space where a post should be before the grig continues. This void varies in size based on however many images are in my slider.

The suggested image size for the featured content section is 980 wide by 415 tall — anything smaller will display differently, which could explain the visual discrepancy you noted.
