johnoatdesignMemberHi. I am new to WordPress and the Portfolio theme. I’d like my gallery set up so that when someone clicks on the image they are directed to another page with a larger image, the description, and the option to view previous or next images in the gallery.
Here is a page from a site created with Portfolio that demonstrates what I am asking.
http://deniswong.com/2013/02/07/moments/
When I click on an image in my gallery the carousel appears. I like the separate page option better. Can you head me in the right direction?

Thanks!
The blog I need help with is johnoat.wordpress.com
Zack TollmanMemberHi John!
It looks like the user has setup two galleries on the site. The first is displayed as a slider and the second is a grid of thumbnails. Take a look at the document I linked to in order to learn more about adding galleries to your site.
johnoatdesignMemberThanks for the link to the gallery info page. Sorry if I didn’t explain myself clearly. I am still stuck. I have no problem creating galleries, but when the thumbnail image is selected I don’t want the carousel option.
Here is a good example from another painter of how I’d like the page to look like when the thumbnail image is clicked.

The above site was created with another blogging software, and while playing around with the Portfolio theme I was able to get it to work, but unfortunately I don’t know what I did to create it and have not been able to recreate the process. Hope this helps clarify my question. Thanks again.
Zack TollmanMemberHi John!
Forgive me, but I am still not sure what you are trying to accomplish.
If you are comfortable creating galleries, you can create a gallery and it will display as the grid of images like what you see on http://deniswong.com/2013/02/07/moments/. When you click on the image, it should take you to the attachment page.
johnoatdesignMemberThanks for the quick reply.!
I think the issue is that clicking on the image does not take me to an attachment page. Instead I end up with the carousel. Turning off the carousel function and then clicking on the gallery image brings me to a page with the message: 404: Page Not Found
We are terribly sorry, but the URL you typed no longer exists. It might have been moved or deleted. Try searching the site:
I’ll try turning off the carousel before creating a gallery page and see what happens. Any ideas? Thanks!
ScottInactiveSorry to hear about this, John.
To better understand this issue, I’ve requested access to your site. Could you please provide us with a link to the page you’re referring to, so we can take a look?
johnoatdesignMemberNo problem.
Here are the two gallery links.

Thanks again!
ScottInactiveHi again, John,
Thanks for those links! It looks like I requested access to http://johnoatdesign.wordpress.com, not http://johnoat.wordpress.com/.
I’ve requested access to your new site. Thanks for your patience!
johnoatdesignMemberHi Scott,
I just granted you access. Thanks for your help. Looking forward to getting the gallery launched!
ScottInactiveThanks, John!
You may want to try editing your gallery settings:
1. Click to Edit Gallery;
2. Select an image;
3. Under Gallery settings, select Attachment from the Link To option;
4. Click Update gallery.
You may need to repeat steps 2 and 3 for all images.
I hope this helps :)
johnoatdesignMemberHi Scott,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I checked all the images and made sure the Link To option was set on Attachment Page and the gallery thumbnails still open to the carousel when clicked on and not the attachment page. I also tried deleting the gallery and creating a new one with the same result. I either get the 404 error message when the carousel is turned off or the carousel when it is on.
I found a closed Topic page on the WordPress Forum with others mentioning problems with the carousel. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-i-turn-off-the-new-gallery-carousel?replies=13
As I mentioned above Denis’s site is working fine: http://deniswong.com/2013/02/07/moments/
I cleared my browser cache and cookies as recommended by WordPress, but that didn’t help.
Please let me know how to fix the problem. I need to get this site up and running. Thanks!
ScottInactiveHi again, John,
I either get the 404 error message when the carousel is turned off or the carousel when it is on.
How are you disabling the carousel slideshow? Are you doing this from your Settings → Media page?
I’d like my gallery set up so that when someone clicks on the image they are directed to another page with a larger image, the description, and the option to view previous or next images in the gallery.
Have you tried using the purpose-built Portfolio page template? I think this would work perfectly for what you’re trying to set up.
johnoatdesignMemberHi Scott,
Yes, I disabled the carousel slideshow from Settings – Media page. I tried building the gallery with the Portfolio page template. If you click on the Portfolio Gallery in my menu you’ll see the results. I tried it 2 ways. Click on the thumbnails and you’ll open the carousel. Click on the Portfolio Gallery Post and you’ll see thumbnails that when clicked open an page with the 404: Page Not Found message.
Sorry this seems so complicated. Am I missing a key part of the process? It should be very easy. Again, here is an example of the type of gallery I am trying to duplicate on my site: http://deniswong.com/2013/02/07/moments/
Drew StrojnyMemberHi John,
I’m going to pass this over to the Theme Team. I don’t know why your attachment pages would be showing 404.
johnoatdesignMemberOK, thanks!
Michael FieldsMemberHi John,
The attachments are 404ing because they are attached to posts/pages that are either drafts of in the trash. To fix them you could either:
1. Publish their parents.
2. Fully delete their parents.
3. Re-attach the images to new parents.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this process.
johnoatdesignMemberMichael,
Thanks! Deleting the posts/pages in the trash fixed the 404ing problem.
Michael FieldsMemberGreat! Glad to hear that this worked for you :) I’m going to close this thread as resolved. Feel free to open a new one if you have another question.
